During our first stay in Nanumea (June, 1973 to January, 1975), we visited with each household between August 8th and December 3, 1973. At that time there were 144 individual households (matakaaiga). We used these visits to get to know each household and we took down a variety of information about each of them. We also requested that each household have as many members present as possible so that we could take photographs of them at the completion of the visit. These photographs were taken using a 35mm camera and black and white film.
We started the household survey at the Haumaefa end of the village, moved on through Lolua, then to Matagi, Motufoliki and finally Lakena. We gave each household a number and we have used these numbers here for convenience.
